Online Casino Table Games: Types, Rules and How They Differ

Online casino table games including blackjack and roulette

Online casino table games take familiar casino formats such as blackjack, roulette and baccarat and make them available through digital or live-dealer tables.

They are often grouped together because they originated around physical casino tables, but the games themselves work very differently. Blackjack involves decisions after the cards are dealt, roulette centres on choosing a bet before the wheel determines the result, while baccarat follows fixed drawing rules after the initial wager.

Understanding those differences is more useful than treating every table game as another version of the same experience.

What are online casino table games?

Casino table games are structured games played according to a defined set of rules, bets and payouts.

In a physical casino, they are traditionally organised around a dedicated table with a dealer, cards, a wheel or dice. Online, the same basic formats can be reproduced digitally through software or streamed from a live studio with real equipment and a human dealer.

Common categories include:

  • blackjack;
  • roulette;
  • baccarat;
  • casino poker variants;
  • dice-based table games;
  • live-dealer versions of traditional games.

The important point is that each category has its own rules. Knowing how blackjack works does not tell you how roulette or baccarat will be settled.

Blackjack: decisions during the hand

Blackjack is built around the relationship between the player’s hand and the dealer’s hand.

The objective is usually to finish with a valid total closer to 21 than the dealer without exceeding 21. After the initial cards are dealt, the player may have decisions such as hitting, standing, doubling or splitting, depending on the hand and table rules.

Those decisions make blackjack different from many other casino table games.

Table conditions also matter. The number of decks, natural-blackjack payout, dealer rule on Soft 17 and restrictions on doubling or splitting can all change from one version to another.

Our dedicated online blackjack guide explains the hand values, dealer rules and main player decisions in more detail.

Roulette: choosing what the wheel must hit

Roulette works differently because the main decision is made before the outcome is generated.

Players place bets on individual numbers or groups of numbers, then the wheel and ball determine the winning result.

A straight-up bet covers one number and offers a higher payout than a broad outside bet such as red or black because it covers fewer possible outcomes.

The wheel itself also matters. European roulette normally uses a single zero, while traditional American roulette adds both 0 and 00.

That extra pocket changes the mathematical structure of the game even though many of the standard payouts remain the same.

The online roulette guide covers wheel types, inside and outside bets and the standard payout structure.

How does baccarat work?

Baccarat usually revolves around three main betting outcomes: Player, Banker or Tie.

Two hands are dealt according to fixed rules, and the winning hand is the one whose final total is closest to nine.

Unlike blackjack, the player does not normally decide whether the Player or Banker hand should draw another card. The game’s third-card rules determine that automatically.

Cards from 2 to 9 use their face values, tens and picture cards count as zero, and an ace counts as one. When a total exceeds nine, only the final digit is used.

For example, a hand containing 7 and 8 totals 15, which is treated as 5 in baccarat.

The exact payout structure should still be checked on the individual table. Traditional baccarat commonly applies a commission to winning Banker bets, while some variants use different rules instead.

What are casino poker table games?

The word “poker” can describe two quite different types of online play.

Traditional poker rooms usually involve players competing against one another, with the operator providing the platform and taking a fee.

Casino poker variants are different. Games such as Three Card Poker or Casino Hold’em normally pit the player’s hand against a dealer or fixed paytable rather than against other players at the table.

That distinction changes the entire structure of the game.

A familiar poker hand ranking may still be used, but the betting stages, qualifying rules, dealer requirements and payouts depend on the specific variant.

For that reason, knowing Texas Hold’em does not automatically mean knowing the rules of every casino poker game.

What about craps and other dice games?

Some casino table games use dice instead of cards or a wheel.

Craps is the best-known example. It uses the outcome of two dice and offers a large number of different betting options around each roll.

Other online casinos may include Sic Bo or simplified digital dice games within the same table-games category.

These should not be treated as one system simply because dice are involved. Each game uses its own betting layout, combinations and payout structure.

Reading the rules of the exact version is especially useful when a table presents many possible bets at once.

Live dealer vs digital table games

Most major table-game categories are available in both digital and live formats.

A digital game generates and displays the round through software. This usually allows quicker transitions between rounds and removes the need to wait for a physical dealer.

A live-dealer game streams a real table, cards or roulette wheel from a studio or casino-style environment while players place their bets through an online interface.

The presentation changes, but the underlying rules still need to be checked.

A live blackjack table can use a different natural-blackjack payout or dealer rule from another live table. A live roulette table can use a single-zero or double-zero wheel.

“Live” describes how the game is delivered, not one universal set of rules.

Do digital and live versions have the same rules?

Sometimes, but not automatically.

Two games can share the same name while using different table conditions, limits or optional bets.

In blackjack, the number of decks or rules around doubling can differ. In roulette, the wheel type can change. In baccarat, commission and side-bet structures may vary.

This is why the information panel or table rules should be checked before treating two versions as interchangeable.

The graphics and dealer presentation are secondary to the rules that determine how the round is settled.

Table limits and bet sizes

Online table games normally specify a minimum and maximum wager.

Those limits can differ significantly between tables, even within the same game category.

A higher table limit does not mean the game offers better probabilities, and a lower limit does not change the underlying rules.

Limits mainly determine the range of stakes the table accepts.

For practical comparison, it is better to look at the rules first and then check whether the available limits fit the amount intended for play.

Main bets and side bets are different

Many modern table games include optional side bets alongside the main game.

Blackjack tables may offer bets based on the player’s first two cards, while baccarat tables can include additional outcomes beyond Player, Banker and Tie. Casino poker games may also have separate bonus paytables.

A side bet should be treated as a separate wager.

Its payout and probability structure can be completely different from the main game, even though both are resolved during the same round.

A visually prominent side bet is therefore not automatically part of the basic rules of the table.

What do payouts actually mean?

Casino-table payouts are usually shown as ratios.

A payout of 1:1 means a winning bet returns profit equal to the stake, in addition to the original stake being returned. A 2:1 payout means the profit is twice the stake.

Different games use different payout structures because the number of possible outcomes and conditions for winning are different.

A large advertised payout does not by itself make one bet better than another. Higher payouts are generally associated with outcomes that occur less frequently.

The useful comparison is between the payout and the rules that determine when it applies.

Can strategy change every table game?

The role of player decisions varies considerably.

Blackjack gives the player choices during the hand, which is why decision-based strategy can be relevant.

Roulette allows a player to choose different bets and stake patterns, but a betting system does not change the number of pockets on the wheel or the payouts attached to those bets.

Baccarat is more restricted because the drawing sequence is handled by fixed rules after the initial bet.

This is one reason the phrase “table-game strategy” can be misleading when applied to every game in exactly the same way.

How crypto payments relate to table games

Using cryptocurrency to fund an online casino account does not create a different version of blackjack, roulette or baccarat.

The payment system and the game rules are separate layers.

A crypto deposit concerns the digital asset, network and wallet transaction, while the table itself still follows its normal rules and payouts.

Our broader crypto casino guide for Dubai explains the payment side, including the distinction between blockchain transfers and what happens once a casino game begins.

How to compare online casino table games

Start by identifying what actually determines the result.

For blackjack, that means understanding card values, dealer rules and the decisions available during the hand. For roulette, check the wheel type and what each bet covers. For baccarat, understand the Player, Banker and Tie outcomes and the table’s commission or payout rules.

Then check whether the game is digital or live, what its minimum and maximum stakes are, and whether optional side bets have been added.

The best comparison is not which table has the most elaborate presentation. It is whether you understand the rules that determine how your selected game works.
